Capstone Project: Football Stats App

CAPSTONE PROJECT
Objective

The goal of this project is to design an app that can bring sports stats, both advanced and simple, to sports fans everywhere with a simple and easy-to-use interface that focuses on the stats and increases sharability. This resource will have advanced game logs, informative charts, customizable stat splitting, and compare features to dig deep into the game by the numbers. When sports fans are more informed, it closes the information gap between experts and fans, making sports knowledge more prevalent.

Deliverables
  • Design documentation

  • Interactive Figma Prototype

  • Presentation to peers and stakeholders

RESEARCH
Competetive Analysis

I analyzed multiple different sports stats apps/websites to understand what stats and features are featured. The ESPN app is the go-to sports app for millions of sports fans and is generally considered to be the default app. I also looked at Real Sports, a relatively new sports app that is focused on providing sharable stats to fans, which has revolutionized the sports app market. Lastly, I looked at Sports Reference, an advanced stats website that is no thrills but is very powerful. This is the main inspiration behind my project, as I want to take the advanced stats that come with Sports Reference and bring it to a user-friendly app.

Competitive analysis, sorted

User Interviews

I completed two discovery interviews with college students who use sports apps. I asked them a variety of questions regarding how often they use it, what they use it for, what they would like to see in a sports stats app, and more. Overall, I identified that there is not much need for a live sports score app, there are many current options, many of which are good, so I am not planning on creating something for that. The main needs are for a user-friendly stats app that would provide users the ability to view football stats and visualizations as they would like to see, with an emphasis on sharability, to increase sports knowledge.

Interview Insights, sorted

I also completed 3 continuation interviews with varying levels of sports fans and interests to vet the different features that I currently plan on moving forward with. The quality of these interview results varied, but it was still nice to get some confirmation that my initial and revised features were something the user base would want. Being a part of the user base, I knew that I could craft this app well without help from others, but both the discovery interviews and these interviews made me sure that I was well on the right track.

DESIGN & TESTING
Sketches

Next up, I developed some sketches to match the insights I received from both the competitive analysis and the user interviews.

Design System

In order to develop a consistent look across this product, I developed a design system, consisting of colors and components for displaying stats, information, and headers.
